The large brown toyger mix picked his way through the frosty territory of RaggedClan, his vivid green eyes piercing through the early morning mist that lay thick over the think coating of ice and snow. A stiff breeze wound through the rocky area, rustling the branches of a frozen birch, clacking the branches and forcing Brackenfeather to ruffle up his fur against the biting cold. His breath steamed in front of him as he aimlessly meandered with sure pawsteps, the ground crunching softly beneath his pads. Despite the chill bearing down on him, the Warrior was in high spirits as he traversed across the territory, upbeat and just in a generally great mood. Then again, Brackenfeather was rarely in a sour one, usually good-natured and ready to take on the day. A small scuffling drifted to his keen ears and the RaggedClan Warrior paused, raising his muzzle, jaws parting to let the scents wash across his tongue. His pointed ears swiveled, picking out the location of the sound, waiting for another hint as to where it was emanating from. It didn't take long for the rustle of snow betrayed the creature and Brackenfeather quickly pinpointed the area of his prey. Slipping fluidly into a hunter's crouch from moons of practice, the large cat moved forward, his steps now silent on the frosty ground. His gleaming, emerald eyes spotted a small light grey shape snuffling among the cracks of a large boulder. Picking his way carefully, Brackenfeather slowly began to advance on the unaware mouse, his eyes trained on his prey. ' Just a couple more steps...'

Windchill lowered her head to sniff the base of a large oak tree. She was hunting near one of the many streams that ran through RaggedClan territory, in the area west of camp. It was early in the morning, but a fresh start never hurt anyone. She'd been up before dawn, which was a regular occurrence despite her dislike of waking up early, padding quietly out of camp and down the mountain side. Normally, she'd have gone straight to Pebble Lake to do some fishing, but for some reason, she'd decided to go west instead of east, to where the stones of RaggedClan and sands of TidalClan began to intertwine.
Flicking her ears, Windchill could hear the scurrying of tiny paws beneath the snow. She paused, remembering a time when she was an apprentice where she'd watched a fox from behind a bush as it leapt into the air and crunched down through the snow with it's paws. The unfortunate prey beneath was startled, and in the confusion, often burst up through the snow right into the fox's powerful jaws. Windchill had adapted the technique as a youngster, and now, she did the same. Pinpointing the whereabouts of a mouse beneath the white blanket, she bunched her muscles before jumping up, coming down heavily and paws crunching down through the upper layer of snow, revealing the prey tunnel below, and it's surprised occupant.
Windchill shoved her muzzle into the snow, teeth snapping, her yellow gaze focused. After a moment, Windchill's tail suddenly straightened, and she lifted her head out of the snow triumphantly. A mouse squeaked and squirmed in her jaws, but with a simple snap, the tiny creature fell limp between her teeth. Sinking her sharp fangs in deeper for a better hold, Windchill opted to take her prey with her, rather than burying it. She was a long way from camp, and she didn't want to have to come back for it later.
Trotting through the snow, Windchill's ears pricked after a little while. It sounded like another mouse was nearby. But as she dropped her catch on the ground to scent the new prey, another smell entered her nostrils. It was a RaggedClan scent, and Windchill squinted through the trees, glimpsing a dark brown pelt. She opted to stay quiet so that whoever it was could successfully go after their prey.

As Brackenfeather neared, he finally got close enough to his prey. He smirked at the mouse's intensity in searching for food. In it's struggle find food of its own, it was about to become food for RaggedClan. Pausing to wriggle into a better position, he kept his bright green gaze riveted on his prey. Then, with a tightening of his muscles, Brackenfeather launched himself forward with a powerful leap. His paws outstretched and unsheathed, he didn't utter a noise until his paws slammed into the mouse from behind. His claws sunk into the soft, warm flesh of his prey and he quickly snaked his head forward, finishing it off swiftly with a nip to its head. Rising up from his catch, triumph flashed in his gaze as he retracted his claws. Then, suddenly he stiffened as the scent of another cat washed over him. He quickly relaxed once he recognized it as another member of RaggedClan, and he gazed around, looking for the other Warrior. He had to look several times, before he spotted the form of WindChill, hovering not to far off, as her white fur blended in with the grey and white sky and snow. Flicking his tail in greeting, he spotted a mouse of her own dangling from Windchill's jaws. "I see that you've had good fortune as well in hunting," he mewed to her with a small half-grin, his neat catch only improving his already high mood.

Windchill was as still as a stone, snow drifting gently down from the sky and settling in her fur as she watched her Clanmate stalk the mouse. The other cat was close enough now that Windchill could identify him by sight; it was Brackenfeather, a tom not much older than Windchill who was well known in RaggedClan for his fiery personality. She half-smiled to herself at the thought. She wasn't the only cat in RaggedClan to be trifled with, that was for sure.
Movement snapped her from her thoughts as Brackenfeather made his move on the mouse, leaping forward and snatching the creature in his claws. He straightened, looking very pleased with himself, and Windchill grinned, quirking a brow when he stiffened, finally catching her scent on the breeze. When he looked over at her, she waved her tail in greeting, leaning down to pick up her prey before trotting over to her Clanmate.
"I see that you've had good fortune as well in hunting."
|
Windchill reached his side, and dropped the mouse, her tail flicking back and forth as she greeted him. "I did!" She meowed, returning his grin with one of her own. "I'm a bit surprised that we're both doing so well, considering the weather, Usually prey is much scarcer than this." Windchill looked up at the sky, pondering. "Maybe New-leaf isn't as far off as we thought," She looked back at Brackfeather, shrugging good-naturedly. "That, or StarClan is messing with our heads."[/blockquote][/blockquote]

"]

Brackenfeather watched as Windchill approached, a smile of her own stretched across her maw as the snow gently floated down, accumulating on both of their pelts. "I'm a bit surprised that we're both doing so well, considering the weather, Usually prey is much scarcer than this." ... "Maybe New-leaf isn't as far off as we thought,"The large brown tom gave a nod in agreement to Windchill, giving a silent thanks for the luck. It was a good sign that the prey was running well... "I am too, but I'm glad that prey is running so well," he mewed in response. "And I really hope so... I can't say that I'd miss the snow all that much," he chuckled. He was one for the warmer seasons, preferably Greenleaf to be exact. "That, or StarClan is messing with our heads."Brackenfeather grinned at that statement and let out a soft laugh. "That could be it as well," he said wit ha twitch of his tail tip. He surveyed the area around him before looking back at Windchill. "With the prey moving right now, would you like to hunt together? Maybe with our luck combined, the prey will just leap right into our claws for some warmth," he said brightly, fluffing up his fur against another small breeze that brushed over the pair. He was a little surprised that another Warrior was out hunting so early, and the company would be nice.

Windchill let out a amused snort. "Am I in a Clan with warriors or mice?" she asked, nudging the striped brown tom playfully with an outstretched paw "Surely a little snow doesn't bother you that much Brackenfeather." Windchill got to her paws, and shook out her pelt, watching as little flakes of snow flew off of her and onto the ground. "Personally, I'll be sad to see it all gone. Prey might be scarce sometimes, but there's nothing quite like the crunch of snow beneath your paws, and the crisp Leaf-bare wind in your fur."
She knew that not many felt the same way. Greenleaf was much more preferable to most cats, as the weather was warm and sunny, and prey was bountiful throughout every part of RaggedClan territory. Windchill smiled and shook her head. "Ah well, you've got a point all the same. RaggedClan could use whatever prey we can find, right?"
"With the prey moving right now, would you like to hunt together? Maybe with our luck combined, the prey will just leap right into our claws for some warmth,"
Windchill let out a laugh, her eyes bright, suddenly feeling quite cheery. When she wasn't out with Slatepaw, Mudpaw or Singewhisker, she usually hunted and patrolled alone. The idea of joining Brackenfeather and perhaps working as a team was very appealing, and she heartily agreed. "Sounds good to me," she replied, whiskers twitching slightly. "I hope you're right about the prey. I can't imagine anything wanting to jump into my claws just to get warm." She unsheathed the claws on her right paw as she spoke, brandishing them proudly before placing her paw back on the ground. She then dug a quick hole in the snow, and took both her mouse and Brackenfeather's in her jaws, placing them in the hole and hiding them from scent and sight. "We can come back for them later," she meowed, straightening. "Now, where are we off to?"

Brackenfeather gave a soft, friendly rumble as Windchill poked him, teasing him about being a mouse of a Warrior. He listened to her explain about Leafbare and looked around. He could see how the frosted landscape and frozen aspen could be appealing to some, but he felt that a pretty territory wasn't worth the hardship and chill that followed the season's icy embrace. "Dear StarClan, I'm in a Clan of Leafbare lovers!" he protested with a grin. "Turns out Burrtuft is also a fan of this icy sheet that intrudes annually," the large warrior meowed with a friendly chuckle. "Mouse of not, I'd rather it be Greenleaf or even Newleaf any day of the week. Less cold, less slippery, and less snow!" As Windchill agreed to accompany him hunting, his tail waved in bright eagerness, greatly appreciating the company of another Clanmate. It wasn't often that others were up at such an early time, and even when they were, they usually didn't want to step out of the warmth of camp. "Well, since we've both been hunting around here, want to try heading towards Pebble Lake? Might be more prey around there, if you aren't afraid to get your paws a little wet," Brackenfeather teased, returning a gentle barb from her previous one before.

"You got that right!" Windchill said, in response to his little quip about Leaf-bare. "And Burrtuft has got good taste then! ...But I've got to admit, it is a lot less slippery on the mountain in Newleaf and Greenleaf."
"Well, since we've both been hunting around here, want to try heading towards Pebble Lake? Might be more prey around there, if you aren't afraid to get your paws a little wet,"

A purr rumbled from her chest as Windchill grinned at her companion, unsheathing her claws in anticipation. Pebble Lake was her preferred place to hunt, for obvious reasons. Fish were often trapped in the lake during Leaf-bare, their sluggish movements making them easy targets for the grey she-cat. She frequented the small body of water, cold or hot. Ironically, Windchill wasn't fond of getting wet, nor was water a thing she enjoyed. But she put up with it because it was in the water where her favourite prey dwelled. "I hope you're ready for a little competition," She meowed in rebuttal, her tail flicking back and forth mischievously. "I know that place like the back of my paw, and trust me, wet paws will be the least of your problems." Windchill stuck her chest out proudly, puffing up slightly so that she looked bigger. "You're looking at the best fish hunter in RaggedClan! I suppose I could always share a few tips of course, but it'll take a while before you reach my skill level." Her tone was playful and cocky, challenging the brown tom to try and beat her. "But enough mewing yeah? Let's get going!" Windchill spun around and trotted off into the trees, looking behind her to see if Brackenfeather was following. Brackenfeather grinned as she relented a little into admitting that the warmer seasons did have some good qualities. "And at least some of the dangers of the mountain stay away from the cold in Leafbare," he said, offering up a compromise with a friendly flick of his tail. At the mention of hunting at Pebble Lake, he noticed that it was a preferred location and he felt a flash of happiness at not disappointing Windchill. He knew that it was hard to enjoy something when you hated the location... "I hope you're ready for a little competition," "I know that place like the back of my paw, and trust me, wet paws will be the least of your problems." "You're looking at the best fish hunter in RaggedClan! I suppose I could always share a few tips of course, but it'll take a while before you reach my skill level."
Brackenfeather let out a small chuckle, his eyes glittering and reflecting her challenge. "Really? The best fish hunter in our whole Clan?" he mewed with mock awe. "I guess we'll find out soon enough, won't we?" he challenged, although the brown tom had a feeling that she might just be better than him. He didn't have much experience with fishing, as it wasn't his preferred prey. "But enough mewing yeah? Let's get going!" The large, brown Warrior gave a nod and quickly followed after Windchill's white form. As she paused to look back at him, he let a sly smile show and suddenly took off, sending up a plume of snow, spraying out from his paws. "Well, come on then!" he called pelting across the snow in the direction of Pebble Lake, his voice with with humor.

"C'mon Snailpaw!" Windchill grinned back at brown tom, waiting for him to catch up. She watched a sly look grace his features, and before Windchill could blink, Brackenfeather was off. The grey she-cat shut her eyes tightly, letting out a laugh as Brackenfeather streaked past her, showering her pelt her snow as he ran off into the woods, headed for Pebble Lake. "Oh, you're in for it now!" She called, bunching her muscles before taking off, her legs nearly a blur as she ran to catch up with her Clan-mate.
The two cats raced across RaggedClan territory, leaping through bushes and tearing across snow-covered clearings, laughing as they went. The two cats made quick time to where the hunting paths split in the foothills of Mount Talon, one in the direction of camp, and one to the Dark Forest portal and beyond.
Her breath was coming in pants now, fogging out into the air before dissipating in the breeze. Windchill had to admit that running wasn't a strong suit of hers, unless she was being chased and it was absolutely necessary to get away. She was better at fighting, to be sure, and as such, she was going to need a break soon. So instead of asking Brackenfeather to stop (which would in turn mean admitting defeat), Windchill put on a burst of speed, enough so that she was alongside her companion. Flashing him a wicked grin (which turned out to be the only warning the tom got), Windchill took a flying leap at him, propelled forward by her powerful hind legs. She knocked Brackenfeather's paws out from under him, in doing so unbalancing herself as well, and the move ended up sending them both tumbling into the snow.

Brackenfeather laughed as he raced across the snowy territory with Windchill hard on his paws. His dazzling green eyes glowed with excitement and enjoyment, his paws pounding in the powdering covering. The cold air seared his lungs with each breath, filling him with energy as he pelted towards Pebble Lake. As they continued their run, his breath billowed in small white puffs, his body stretching as he lengthened his stride. A flicker of white caught his peripheral vision and he glanced over to see Windchill bursting in speed, matching his pace. Soon she would pull ahead of him, and the large tom knew that he wouldn't have the endurance to win this friendly challenge. But Windchill didn't pull ahead as he expected; no, instead he saw a flash of teeth as she gave wicked grin. He probably should've seen it coming, but when Windchill launched herself at him, he was caught totally unaware. He gave a small grunt as she tackled him into the snow and his eyes lit up with surprise, and then glee. He felt like a kit again, and dang, it was nice. As his jaws parted in a laugh, his face hit the snow, swallowing up his laughter as he got a mouthful of the chilly whiteness, but it didn't dampen his spirits a bit. Hooking his paws around her legs, Brackenfeather held on as the pair tumbled across the snow until their momentum ceased and he gave one last wump! as he landed in the snow beside her. His paw flashed out and he lightly cuffed Windchill on the ear playfully. "You know, I think that could be called cheating... or sabotaging..." he joked as he lay in the snow with a purr rumbling in his throat, maw spread in a wide grin. He lay in the snow, the cold barely registering through his winter coat and the warmth from the run in his body. "So does this mean that I win?" Brackenfeather asked with a cheeky smile, looking over at Windchill.

Windchill had intended to pin Brackenfeather into the snow after recovering from the fall, but she was not expecting his paws to wrap around her legs. She tried to wriggle them free, but the tom had them pinned down. There was no getting out of it now.
Hitting the ground, Brackenfeather and Windchill tumbled head over paws through the fluffy white snow, eventually landing in a fuzzy heap of fur and tails. Windchill hit the ground laughing uncontrollably, her sides heaving and her breath fogging up into the air as her whole frame shook with mirth. She hadn't had this much fun in a very long time. Most cats would say they felt like they were young again but Windchill had never experienced this sort of thing. A large chunk of her youth had been spent in isolation, away from other cats as she grieved Stonepaw's passing. It was only when she became a young warrior that Windchill was finally able to let go, and move on with her life. But even then, she'd never really let loose before. It was exhilarating.
"You know, I think that could be called cheating... or sabotaging..."
|
Panting, Windchill turned to look at her companion, eyes bright with surprised glee. "Whatever it was, we should do it again!" she exclaimed, breathless. Brackenfeather cuffed her ear good naturedly and a shaky purr rumbled up out of her chest before Windchill let her head fall back, relaxing her muscles and sighing contentedly. "So does this mean I win?"Windchill turned to mock glare at her friend, her brow quirked. "I think not sir," she said with smirk. " You may have... Well, sort of won the race, but I clearly had the tactical advantage during our scuffle."[/blockquote][/blockquote]

"]

Windchill's laughter rang through the air around them and his own joined it, rising up with hers. "Whatever it was, we should do it again!" A purr rumbled in his throat at that comment, and he wholeheartedly agreed. It was nice to just let loose and be without a care, at least for a while... " You may have sort of won the race, but I clearly had the tactical advantage during our scuffle."The large tom's own eyebrow arched upwards, a lopsided half-grin plastering across his face. "Oh really?" he chuckled, his tail swishing and sweeping across the snow. "Well, I guess that makes us tied then, wouldn't you say?" he mewed, beginning to relax. He glanced up, the snow falling down slowly, seemingly appearing from nothing as he gazed up past the aspen trees to the clouded sky. Reaching his paw upward, he caught a single flake on the pad of his paw and looked at it as it began to melt. It was tiny, smaller than a claw even, but it had an intricate design that was lost as it began to melt into a small droplet of water. "Odd, how these tiny little things can make the whole world white..." he murmured.

"Oh really? Well, I guess that makes us tied then, wouldn't you say?"

Windchill rolled over onto her stomach, crossing her forepaws and lying perpendicular to Brackenfeather. She mock glared at him, and lifted a paw to shove his shoulder lightly. "You wish." she drawled, pulling back her paw and pushing her chest out confidently. "It'll take more than a little race to convince me you've got to my level of awesome." Windchill smirked at him, the quirk in her mouth relaxing into an easy smile as a comfortable silence fell over the two. Windchill watched Brackenfeather's eyes wander, eventually turning towards the sky. Windchill followed his gaze, and for a few minutes, it was quiet as the two cats watched the snow slowly fall from the sky. Windchill's mind wandered, thinking back to the past few weeks. Between training with Slatepaw and constant dawn patrols, she really hadn't had any time to relax. She made a mental to do this again. Whether with Brackenfeather or another cat, this was something she had sorely needed. "Odd, how these tiny little things can make the whole world white..."Windchill's ears perked up, and she turned to look at her friend, cocking her head to the side. Brackenfeather was watching a snowflake melt on his paw, his gaze soft but focused as the droplet of water rolled off his pad and into the snow. "Amazing, more like." Windchill meowed, a gentle smile on her face. "Just one snowflake will melt away into nothing, but when they stick together, they can blanket the world." "Amazing, more like."Brackenfeather nodded in agreement as the snowflake completely disappeared. Even if he wasn't a fan of the snow-filled moons, he could agree that the feat of the snow was definitely a great one. "Just one snowflake will melt away into nothing, but when they stick together, they can blanket the world."The large tom let that statement sink in and he smiled softly. "I guess it's proof that when you stand alone, you're more likely to fall than when you have friends beside you," he mused softly. His memory took a sharp turn away from the present and he remembered his frail, weakened mentor... Brackenfeather would've lost his life that night, had his mentor not stood beside him. For a moment, his vivid emerald eyes dimmed with sadness, but he quickly pushed it away. No reason to ruin a perfectly good time with sad thoughts... The chill of the snow was beginning to creep through his pelt and after a few more moments, he rolled over and up onto his paws. Giving his coat a swift, vigorous shake to rid himself of the snow, he looked at Windchill, offering a grin. "Well, should we head to Pebble Lake so I can get my tail handed to me in this contest?" he purred, knowing his fishing skills were lacking.
