"I guess it's proof that when you stand alone, you're more likely to fall than when you have friends beside you,"
Windchill gazed at her companion, nodding in agreement, though it looked as if Brackenfeather wasn't paying attention. His eyes were unfocused, and it was clear that he was lost in thought, so the light grey she-cat stayed quiet, allowing the tom some time to think. Her thoughts wandered as well, though not to anything specific. To be honest, she was sort of thinking of herself, as her stomach had begun to growl slightly, though not loud enough to draw attention. She was shaken from her reverie when Brackenfeather rolled over and stood up to shake out his pelt. Windchill squinted her eyes and leaned away as the snow flew off of the tom, some of it hitting her own coat.
"Well, should we head to Pebble Lake so I can get my tail handed to me in this contest?"
|
Windchill jumped onto her paws as well, ignoring the snow on her pelt as she smiled at Brackenfeather. "Sounds good to me," she said, winking slyly at the tom. "We'll see if you're any good." Windchill flicked her tail across Brackenfeather's shoulder before turning way and trotting off into the woods, continuing their journey to Pebble Lake. "Sounds good to me,"... "We'll see if you're any good."Brackenfeather chuckled as Windchill's tail flicked his shoulder. "I wouldn't get your hopes up," he said brightly, following after her, matching her pace as the made their way across the snowy terrain. As they walked, warmth began to return and thaw his chilling limbs and he grew comfortable again. Luckily, the aspen and palms that towered above them blocked the little bit of wind that might have turned the cold day frigid. The large tom was a little surprised to be enjoying the weather... but then again, it wasn't exactly exciting in the morning by yourself. The sun had cleared the horizon completely now, and the rays cast orange-hued light over the snow, patterns dazzling against the bright white. Brackenfeather's bright, green eyes enjoyed the view as the pair walked in companionable silence as they drew closer to Pebble Lake. Scenting the air, the RaggedClan warrior could now pick out the scent of the chilled water, bright and sharp compared to the muted, snow-covered scents of the forest. It wouldn't be much longer until Windchill and he reached their destination.

It didn't take much longer for the two warriors to reach Pebble Lake. Stepping out of the trees, Windchill opened her mouth and breathed in the familiar scents of the area, letting them flow across her tongue and letting out a happy sigh when she smelled nothing out of the ordinary. It was just as it should be in her favourite hunting grounds, and the grey she-cat's yellow gaze was already bright and determined. She was ready to show Brackenfeather just how good a hunter she was.
"Follow me," She said, flicking her tail and bounding across the snow, reaching the edge of the water quickly. In the shallow areas, the frozen water was thin, and it was dangerous to pad out onto the ice without knowing where to go. Luckily, Windchill knew the Lake like a Queen knew her kits; she trotted forward to where a log lay across the bank, reaching out onto the ice and providing a safe bridge for any cat to cross. "Watch your step here," She warned, leaping nimbly up onto the fallen tree before turning back to Brackenfeather. "The branches can get slippery. We wouldn't want you falling it, right?" She flashed her pointy teeth at him, smirking. "Otherwise I'd have to jump in after you." Now that was a thought Windchill did not welcome. Fish she liked. Water she did not.
Stepping up carefully onto the trunk, Windchill made her way across the log to where the ice was thick enough to stand on. She landed on the ice with no problem at all, her sharp claws already holding her steady on the slippery surface. In front of her lay the rest of Pebble Lake, and dotted all across it were small fishing holes which she'd kept up through most of Leaf-bare. It was hard work, but the reward was definitely worth it.
Windchill turned her back on them however, in order to keep an eye on Brackenfeather. He was a competent warrior, older than her even, but he wasn't as familiar with these methods as she was. So while she knew he could handle himself, she watched him all the same, ready to jump in and help if needed.

The large brown tom trot alongside Windchill, enjoying the companionship and fairly mild Leafbare weather, his gaze sweeping over the territory until Pebble Lake stretched out before them. The rising sun glimmered off the snow, orange and red hues cascading over the ice, catching his attention. "Follow me,"Windchill's words snapped his attention back to her and Brackenfeather followed after without complaint. She knew this part of the territory much, much more than he and he would be a fool to not let her take the lead. As they made their way around the lake, Brackenfeather forced himself to not hesitate. He really didn't want to go for a swim in the frigid waters... But Windchill seemed confident in her steps, and put his trust in her as they traversed, looking for a spot. A large log jutted out from the safety of the bank to a little ways onto the not-so-safe ice. He glanced at it, slightly wary, as his eyes couldn't really tell a difference. Again, Leafbare was not his time... "Watch your step here," "The branches can get slippery. We wouldn't want you falling it, right?" "Otherwise I'd have to jump in after you."Brackenfeather shared a smirk as she made her way across. "Funny," he snorted with a flick of his tail. "But how about we both avoid taking a swim," he mewed as he bunched up his muscles and leaped up onto the log. Unsheathing his claws, he gripped the log as best he could, making slower progress compared to Windchill. At the end, he went to leap off onto the ice. His back paws slipped and he careened forward, the pads of his front paws hitting the ice in front of him and shooting out on the the slippery surface. He landed with a thump, legs at all angles and his chin smacking roughly on the ice. "Ow..." he muttered, embarrassment washing over his pelt as he kept his gaze firmly fixed on Windchill's paws, and not the smirk that was surely going to be there. 'Smooth... Such the amazing, fierce RaggedClan warrior you are Brackenfeather... Taken down by ice...' he thought, but he allowed him a small half-smile. Might as well roll with it... "You know, I totally meant to do that..." he mewed as he tried to haul himself to his paws, slipping once or twice before managing to rise. "I've been practicing for moons, actually," he mewed with an embarrassed grin.

Windchill let out a laugh as the tabby warrior slowly (but safely) made his way across the bridge. "Yes, let's do that." She called, "I think we'd both prefer to stay dry!"
She stepped to the side as he made to jump off the log, eyes widening when his paws hit the slippery surface of the frozen lake, and flew out from underneath him. It was too late to do anything to help him and Windchill winced sympathetically as Brackenfeather fell. He was splayed out beside her, legs all over the place and chin flat on the ice. "Oh, ouch," she mewed, crouching down. "Are you OK? I probably should have warned you about that jump."
"You know, I totally meant to do that..."
Windchill pressed her side against Brackfeather's, letting him lean on her slightly as he found his footing. When he'd righted himself, Windchill backed up, rolling her eyes at his comment and smirking. "I'll take your word for it," she replied, a hint of sarcasm in her tone. "So, shall we get to fishing then?" Without waiting for his reply, Windchill twisted around and padded over to the closest fishing hole, crouching on the edge of the ice and dabbing at the water with her paw. She then turned to look at Brackenfeather, smiling. "Fishing is all about patience. You've got to wait for the fish to come to you." She leaned back. "Wanna give it a shot?"

Brackenfeather was grateful for Windchill's help upon finding his paws. He unsheathed his claws and dug them in for good measure. There... now, if he could just stand here forever, he'd be all good. "I'll take your word for it," "So, shall we get to fishing then?"The large tom gave a small chuckle at Windchill's sarcasm, a half-grin peeking out. Then she turned and began to walk away. Gingerly, he began to pick his way across, but he found that it wasn't all that bad as long as he was careful. And if he used the pad of his paws more so than his claws he could grip the slippery surface better. "Fishing is all about patience. You've got to wait for the fish to come to you." "Wanna give it a shot?"Realizing he was staring at his paws, he looked up and saw a grin on the light grey she-cats face, a sparkle in her eyes. Unsure, he gave a small shrug, but plastered on a smile. "Sure," he mewed. "It can't be that hard..." he said, mentally adding, Right? to the end of his statement. Making his way over to Windchill's side, he sat down, his large frame immediately casting a shadow in the pool. Noticing it, he had the sense to re-position so that his shadow was behind him. Raising one paw, Brackenfeather stared intently at the water, becoming still as he focused... He really wanted to prove that he wasn't totally clumsy... Seeing a fish, his instinct was to rush at it, but he remembered Windchill's advice and waited, letting it come closer... closer... Suddenly, his paw flashed out, striking the water. But he had aimed where the fish was, not where it was going, so his claws only lightly grazed his preys tail harmlessly, splashing up a cold arc of water that luckily avoided the both of them. For a moment, he looked dejected but he lifted his gaze up to Windchill, flicking his ear and licking his wet paw. "What did I do wrong?" he asked, but he didn't whine. He knew that he must have done something, but he couldn't think of it... He'd let it drift closer to him... Windchill would hopefully be able to tell.

Windchill was still as a stone, leaning away from the water so that Brackenfeather could have a go at fishing. She watched the tom crouch by the hole, adjusting his position slightly when his form casted a shadow on the surface of the frozen lake. He's got that part right, she thought with a smile, now intent on his movements, and that of the water.
A flash of silver caught her eye, and Windchill watched as a fish neared the surface, almost close enough to snag. But as she'd suggested, Brackenfeather stayed completely still until it was almost underneath him. Then, without warning, the tom's paw shot out from under him, swiping through the water but coming up empty. Windchill saw his error immediately, and straightened a bit to regard her companion sympathetically.
"What did I do wrong?
"I wouldn't say you did anything wrong," she meowed kindly, surprising herself. "Just that your aim was a bit off. See, the water plays tricks on your eyes. Lemme show you." Windchill leaned over the edge of the fishing hole and dipped a paw in, demonstrating what she was talking about. "See? Look at my paw." She waved it slightly so he would watch. "When I take it out of the water, it looks normal, but when it's in the water, my paw looks like it's been cut and moved to the side." Windchill placed her paw back in the water, continuing. "So, when you're fishing, you have to aim just to the side of the fish. It may seem like your paw will come up empty but really, that's the best spot to make sure you hook one." Windchill finished her little lesson and then crouched low, eyeing the water. "Here, let me see if i can't show you..."
The light grey she-cat froze up, barely breathing as she gazed at the water. A few minutes went by, and then a flash of silver. The fish from earlier had returned to the surface, looking for particles of food that might've landed in the hole. Windchill didn't react at all, staying completely still and letting the fish come closer. Then suddenly, her paw was in the water, snagging the fish on her claws. She hauled the flopping animal out onto the ice and lowered her head to bite it's spine, ceasing it's struggles. Then, she picked it up in her mouth and placed it at Brackenfeather's paws. "See?" She said, grinning. "Now you try."

"I wouldn't say you did anything wrong," "Just that your aim was a bit off. See, the water plays tricks on your eyes. Lemme show you."Brackenfeather listened intently, giving a small nod and scooting away from the hole to watch. As she lowered her paw, he leaned forward, peering over. He blinked as he watched, never really noticing just how much the water could manipulate your perception. "When I take it out of the water, it looks normal, but when it's in the water, my paw looks like it's been cut and moved to the side." "So, when you're fishing, you have to aim just to the side of the fish. It may seem like your paw will come up empty but really, that's the best spot to make sure you hook one."The large brown tom nodded his head slowly as he drank in the lesson, trying to store it to his memory "Here, let me see if i can't show you..."Moving completely out of her way, Brackenfeather settled down to watch Windchill, curling his tail over his paws and putting all his attention onto the white she-cat. He stay still and silent, not wanting to ruin her hunting, and fought the urge to move as he spotted a small flicker of movement. He blinked, and then suddenly, Windchill's grey paw shot into the water, and arced a fish onto the land flawlessly. He let out a whoosh of breath he hadn't known that he had been holding and sprung to his paws, eyes alight. "That was brilliant!" he blurted out brightly, grinning back at Windchill after she'd finished off the fish. It was clear that Windchill was a great fisher, as she made it look effortless, which he clearly knew it was not. "See?" "Now you try."Brackenfeather gave a small chuckle and nodded, making his way back over to the hole in the ice. Crouching down, he took deep breaths to still himself, his emerald eyes fixed on the water and his focus narrowing. This time...this time he'd do it... He waited for a few minutes and he fought the urge to wriggle or just give up... The large tom almost sighed impatiently before he quickly caught himself and returned his focus back to the water below him. Eventually, his patience was rewarded. A small shape moved towards him and he froze, watching it, struggling with himself to wait... Wait, as Windchill had down. Going over her quick lessons, he watched as it drew nearer, agonizingly slowly. Then, when he couldn't wait another heartbeat, he lashed out, aiming to the side as Windchill had instructed, although he felt like he was aiming at nothing. Surprise was his first thought as his claws sunk into something and he hastily tried to scoop out of the fish. The small prey wriggled out of his grasp and hit the ice, right by the edge. Brackenfeather lunged at it, sending it skittering across the ice with him rushing after it, trying to catch the darn slippery thing. Finally, he sunk his jaws in and he'd caught it. He wouldn't admit it, but that was really his first fish successfully caught, which was quite embarrassing. Still, pride and triumph glimmered in his eyes as he returned to Windchill. The catch had been beyond sloppy, and probably quite comical... but it was a catch nonetheless. "Easy," he purred jokingly as he set the silvery body down at Windchill's paws.

Windchill took a step back, giving her tabby companion some room to move about. She was surprised to find herself wanting him to do well. Normally, this sort of thing would have sparked the competitive flame within her, but this time around, that was not the case. She genuinely wanted Brackenfeather to succeed, and she watched eagerly as the tom once again took the spot at the edge of the fishing hole, his bright green eyes intent and focused on the task at hand. Windchill's yellow gaze followed his subtle movements down to his large paws and then to the surface of the water, which was rippling slightly.
Another fish had ventured close to the hole, and it seemed as though Brackenfeather was absolutely determined to catch this one. He was as still as a stone, and was waiting longer than even she might've dared to. She was about to signal him somehow when suddenly, he was dragging the slippery animal out of the water and onto the ice. It was flopping and wriggling about quite a bit, and Windchill couldn't stop the laughter that bubbled up out of her chest as Bracknfeather ran after the slick creature.
Eventually, Brackenfeather was able to get a hold of the fish long enough to bite down and kill it. He trotted back over to her with the prey clamped between his jaws, looking quite pleased with himself. Windchill laughed again, and when he put the fish down at her paws, she couldn't help the amused purr from rumbling out.
"Easy,"
|
"Easy is right!" She meowed, nudging the prey. "And you caught a big one too! Nice work Brackenfeather!" Windchill smiled, and then looked at the two fish they'd caught. They were relatively large, and would feed more than a few cats back at camp. "I know we seem to have a lucky streak going," she said eventually "But I think we've got enough fish, wouldn't you say? Meeting his gaze, Windchill continued. "Maybe you could teach me a few tricks, hmm? Anything you're particularily good at?" Perhaps the tom knew some cool hunting moves, or was an expert at catching birds (she did not fare well in that area). She'd also be up for some battle tactics or something along those lines. Windchill grinned, and then cocked her head at her friend, awaiting his reply. [/blockquote][/blockquote]

"]

"Easy is right!" "And you caught a big one too! Nice work Brackenfeather!"Brackenfeather's grin somehow managed to stretch even further at the praise from the she-cat. Even though she was younger, she clearly was the better fisher of the two, and he didn't take the compliment for granted. "Thanks," he rumbled, looking down at the pairs catches. StarClan had definitely decided to favor them today... "I know we seem to have a lucky streak going," "But I think we've got enough fish, wouldn't you say? "Maybe you could teach me a few tricks, hmm? Anything you're particularity good at?" The large tom nodded in agreement, flicking his tail. They'd done well, especially for leafbare, and he wanted to return the favor for Windchill's help. The tom's head tilted slightly, giving some thought as to what he thought he might be able to help her with. "Well, we could spar if you'd like, and maybe I have a move or two that you haven't tried often," he said with a shrug, deciding on battle skills. It was the large tom's forte, and he figured if there was anything he could teach, it might be a form of battle. Glancing down, he grinned before looking back up at Windchill. "But...maybe not out here on the ice. Wouldn't want us falling in, now would we?" he chuckled with a shrug, going over moves in his head. One in particular came to mind, and he glanced out over the lake. His eyes flickered with light and he flicked his tail, motioning to a small grove of aspen trees. "What about over there?" he mewed, looking at Windchill.

Sparring (and battling in general) was definitely something she excelled at. Her large stature and broad shoulders didn't allow much room for improvement as far as hunting was concerned.
Fishing was about the only type of stalking she was proficient at, and it was the only reason her assessment as an apprentice had been successful. But battle tactics, fighting moves, offense, defence; THEY were her strong suit, no question. But Windchill knew that Brackenfeather was a strong warrior, well known for his unique tactics and strength in RaggedClan. She'd never sparred with the tabby tom before, and she was excited to see if what her Clanmates had said about him was true, and whther or not he had some moves to share.
"But...maybe not out here on the ice. Wouldn't want us falling in, now would we?"
Windchill smirked. "I already told you, I don't wanna have to jump in there after you." Her tone was light, clearly not condescending. And when Brackenfeather suggested a spot to practice, Windchill was quite agreeable. "Sounds good to me. Let's go!"
With that, Windchill lowered her head to pick up one of the fish, gripping it between her teeth before straightening, and padding past Brackenfeather and back over to the fallen log. She leapt up onto the slippery bark, gripping it carefully before padding across, reaching the other side quickly and landing on the snow covered shore.
Windchill padded along the water's edge, keeping her pace slow so that Brackenfeather could catch up. While she waited for the brown tom, Windchill let her gaze wander towards the grove of Aspens where she and her companion would be sparring. It was a good area, open, but with enough trees around to use as cover, or perhaps spots to jump from. Windchill's mind was racing, thinking of strategies she could use and moves that would help her against Brackenfeather.

Brackenfeather grinned at Windchill's reaction, and he was glad that this was something that she could enjoy as well. Nodding, he crouched to grab his single catch before plodding after his companion's light grey form. Traversing the tree went easily, and when he leaped back onto the shore, his landing went much more smoothly than previously. Flicking his tail tip, he sped up to catch up wind Windchill. Trotting beside her, he ran a move over in his head, one that his deceased mentor, Raventail, had shown him. One of the last moves he'd learned... The large tom shook off his memories and then looked over at Windchill as they reached the aspen clearing. Moving forward, he positioned himself to have one of the trees behind him. "Shall we start and see what happens? Use some of our better moves and see if there's anything that we could work on?" he asked with a shrug. Having never really worked with Windchill, he didn't know her fighting style or her knowledge. He'd heard of her prowess in battle, which exhilarated him with the prospect of practicing with another skilled fighter. Sparring for a little could give them both some insight on each other and let them gauge their skills.

When Brackenfeather made it across the bridge, Windchill let out a small sigh of relief before continuing along, allowing the tom to sidle up beside her as they trotted towards the trees. The snow beneath her paws seemed to thin as they neared the forest, and Windchill thought this was quite convenient, as snow was not exactly the ideal surface to fight on. Reaching the grove quickly, Windchill lowered her head to drop her fish by Brackenfether's, well out of harms way and the possibility of a good clawing. Then she padded over to where Brackenfeather stood, taking her place across from him and dropping into a defensive stance, preparing herself should he choose to attack first.
"Shall we start and see what happens? Use some of our better moves and see if there's anything that we could work on?"
"Sounds good to me!" She called across, bunching her muscles. She already knew which move she'd be starting with, and if Brackenfeather didn't make a move to begin this sparring match soon, Windchill had a fine idea to start it herself. She was looking forward to fighting Brackenfeather; it was said that he was a skilled fighter, with many a cat coming back from matches with him exclaiming loudly about his prowess. Having never experienced this herself, Windchill was eager to test the theory. She silently wondered what kind of fighter he was. Did he jump in with claws first, mind last? That didn't sound right. Perhaps he relied heavily on defensive tactics until he could get close. Or maybe, like her, he tried to aim for the element of surprise. Grinning, Windchill hoped it was the latter.
When a few moments passed and no cat had moved, Windchill decided to take the initiative. Her leg muscles, which had been tensed and ready from the start, uncurled and sent her forward quickly and powerfully. She flew across the clearing, seemingly aiming for Brackenfeather's paws. But at the last minute, when she'd touched down right in front of the tom, she used her hind legs to launch herself upward, over Brackfeather and at the tree behind him. Her paws hit the trunk and Windchill immediately twisted her body around, using the tree as a sort of base board as she pushed off once again, heading straight for her companion's striped back. Her body barreled into him from behind, sending both of them tumbling across the clearing.
