A sudden kick made the milky tom snap awake, his ears instantly perked and sky-coloured eyes wide at the blow which had knocked him from a comfortable dream. Twitching, he cast a glance to the apprentices around him, wondering who's paw had lashed out at him in a fit of excitement from some sleepy vision. He still felt unused to sleeping in the apprentice den. While he remembered cuddling next to his mother every night in the nursery, the many fidgeting forms scattered around the young tom made him feel slightly nervous. Milkpaw stifled a yawn as he calmed down, rejoicing in the warmth that seemed to blanket him for the moment, and tried to let himself fall asleep again. But as each den mate seemed determined to squirm and toss in their sleep, the cream apprentice knew he was just kidding himself. As carefully as he could, due to his bulky size and thick fur, the smallest tom of the den stood up and knocked off any lose moss that clung to his pelt. Then, with baited breath, he padded out, not wanting to risk disturbing any other apprentice now that his mind seemed determined on not going back to sleep. It was still so early that the sun hadn't even broken the horizon, but a faint glow seemed to seep across the sky from the east. The camp itself was still mostly cloaked in shadow as the light shimmered and danced from the sea's surface, but Milkpaw could see in the watery light that did dribble into the cave's entrance. Not wanting to leave camp by himself, he sat in the mouth of the cave, pressing slightly against the rock wall to hold in a little warmth while the rest seemed to escape from his mouth in puffs of white cloud. He couldn't help but grin at the fog that seemed to flow from his breath, and swatted at it playfully, glad that it was too early for any warrior to see him. The sun was usually up and making the sea sparkle by the time the camp was bustling with activity, so he knew he didn't need to be too alert. He was an apprentice though, and apparently apprentices weren't meant to behave like kits. But it didn't stop him purring in slight happiness at the simple action of playing with the clouds of water vapour that he blew from his mouth.
*****
Hazepaw suddenly was torn out of her dream when a piece of moss landed directly on her nose. She sneezed and her bright blue eyes snapped open. A silhouette was moving in the den entrance and her ears perked with curiosity. Calling after him would be tactless, she scolded herself. Everyone would wake. As silently as she could, Hazepaw rose from her nest, flicked off her moss more carefully and trodded after him, carefully avoiding stepping on any tail that twitched on the dusty ground.
Hazepaw's steps carried her lightly through the dark cave where the tom's outline rested against the entrance wall. She narrowed her eyes to make out who he was. "Milkpaw?", she mewed, quietly, so that he wouldn't be startled to see her approaching.
*****
The cream coloured tom swung his head around, curious and nervous as to who called his name, only to see it was a fellow apprentice who he must of woken up. “Ah sorry! I didn't mean to wake up you if I did! N-nothing's wrong! ...If you care, if you don't- I'll just shut up now.” He mewed, standing up from his slightly warmed seat against the cave wall, afraid that the cream she-cat had come to growl at him for waking her up so early. As he watched her with an anxious gaze, he scanned her lithe body and sea shell accessory, realising they must not have spoken before. He did recognise her from the apprentice den though, but as of that moment her name had completely slipped out of his mind, and in the chilly winter air, he weakly smiled and added. “If you don't mind me asking.. what was your name?”

"Oh", Hazepaw mewed quietly as she came to sit beside him, cold air pulling slightly at her whiskers. "You didn't wake me", she lied and forced out a smile. He shouldn't feel bad for shoving her from sleep, that was just bad luck. Then she realized he'd asked something else and quickly went on: "Any name's Hazepaw. You're Milkpaw, true?" She let her gaze wander silently over the clumsy tom - he was looking like... heavy bones and thick fur, at best. She didn't want to offend him, so she just refrained from saying out loud and simply gave him a smile that was supposed to look friendly and helpful. She hadn't had much to do with the younger apprentice yet, just seen him a few times ever since he became a 'paw, but they hadn't talked as denmates before. Sad thing. He seemed to be nice enough. Hazepaw sat beside him and curled her short taily neatly around her paws as the sun slowly, very slowly, started poking its face and the graytones started showing color.

Milkpaw twitched at her words, unsure whether she was telling the truth, but deciding that since she was smiling, she must have really just woken up in coincidence, otherwise she would have been frowning and looking grumpy like most apprentices when forced from sleep. He nodded in reply to his name, smiling at her while mentally noting that she was Hazepaw. He didn't want to take the chance of forgetting. She certainly was taller then the younger tom as she sat to his side, but her soft smile assured him that she probably wasn't going to use it to intimidate him like others. Instead he sat down again, his gaze switching back to watching the sea as the sun slowly rose and made it glow. The air was still chilly, so the tom slightly shivered as he sat, his breath still misty as he relaxed again. He found the silence slightly nerve wrecking though, so he mewed curiously. “So how are you.. doing? ... I mean with apprentice duties and stuff..” He added, feeling he needed to clarify himself out of timidness.

Hazepaw shifted her weight to one side so she could fluff out her short tail and chest fur against the cold breeze. "Well...", she muttered as she remembered her assignment was only a few moons away, propably longer due to her deformation. "You know, I learn slowly. Not my mind, but by body." She sighed, hesitating as she had no idea how to explain. Did all cats know of her twisted spine? She knew most cats were aware of it, but she wasn't sure if Milkpaw was - had he just asked to tease her? Because he knew she was struggling a little to keep up? Lost in thoughts her tail-tip drew circles on the smooth rock as she wondered about her warrior training and the tom next to her. He seemed nice enough, she decided. "That wasn't on purpose, was it?", she finally murmured to him without turning her gaze from the rising sun.

Milkpaw looked to the cream coloured she-cat as she hesitated, her voice growing quite as she muttered in reply. His ears flicked as she said that she learnt slowly, due to her body and scanned his eyes quickly across her unable to see anything wrong. However as he realised her face held a hint of sadness, he gasped a little and looked at his paws feeling embarrassed that he hadn't known and reminded her of something that hindered her life. While he knew it wouldn't badly affect his training, the younger tom also disliked his body in the way that it was 'chubby' which as some cats said, was putting it lightly. Young cats were meant to be light, lithe little creatures, almost to the point warriors would be afraid of pushing them too harshly thinking that they would break them. On the other hand, he was a small lump of fat, as he was reminded daily by the giggles and comments some cats made as he walked by, or even to address him. It made him frown to remember, and even more so that he had just done it without realising to Hazepaw. As she asked whether he had meant to point out her disability, he quickly added. “No!... I didn't even realise.. I thought you were just a perfect...-ly normal apprentice. I'm so sorry.” He said quietly, scuffing his paws a little on the sand dusted stone ground.

Hazepaw's ears flicked as she scanned his body. "It's okay", she said, smiling lightly as she saw his embarrassment. He hadn't known, then. Normally most cats noticed, if she didn't tell them, they got it from the way she always smelled lightly of herbs, from the ointment that was massaged to her back every month to prevent her from pain in sleep. She nudged him slightly. "Hey, you didn't do anything wrong. We all have our problems. I have a spine deformation that makes warrior training a little harder for me. But I will finish it and I'll make a fine warrior, just as you will." This was Hazepaw's typical optimism, and the way she'd always comfort a cat feeling bad. She knew he wasn't quite comfortable with his body type, she could guess it from his eyes, but she wouldn't say something about it. She'd never get something forgotten back up if she could help it.

Milkpaw felt the nudge and looked back at her, a little relieved to see that she was still smiling despite his ignorance. At least this she-cat seemed more laid back then others, he thought happily, knowing other cats would've left him by now. As he listened to her though, he couldn't stop himself from glancing at her back, now knowing what was the problem, he could spot the small, unnatural ridge that he had missed previously. It sure looked uncomfortable, though he had little idea what it felt like to live with. After sitting with her for so long, even his fairly fat pink nose could smell the medicinal scent that clung to her pelt but he ignored it as she finished. With a grin, he looked up at her as the sun rose ahead and mewed. “I'm sure you'll be a great warrior, with such optimism and determinedness.” Smiling at the small fact she said he would become a fine warrior. His tail twitched as he heard the small mews of activity from behind, but he wanted to stay sitting with Hazepaw for a little longer, especially when she was so nice. “What have you learnt already then? Like do you know how to fish, and hunt and all that by now?”

Hazepaw smiled at him warmly. She felt the rush of happiness from Milkpaw's pelt at her understanding treatment. It was fairly clear that the young tom didn't hold that much self-confidence, at least not yet, so he could sure do with a friend. Cute little guy. With slightly toned cheeks she gave a laugh at his question and blinked at him sympathetically. "You haven't spent too much time training yet, hm? I am already fairly secure at catching fish, and most of the battle moves." As she realized how arrogant that must sound, she quickly added "but land prey is still very challenging and... you know, I'm already 10 moons old, so I've had a lot of time already to learn all this." Had she stumbled upon the same word twice in one sentence? Oh StarClan.

The off white tom listened with a grin, nodding at her question. So far he'd only toured the territory, talked about the Warrior Code, and discussed apprentice duties with his mentor Palecloud, which was fine, but he wanted to start learning how to hunt. He wasn't the keenest on battle training but if he could learn to feed his clan, he'd be able to feel less useless. As Hazepaw went on to describe her training, he had to feel slightly awed at how much she could do despite her back problem. Milkpaw chuckled as she tried to explain that she was just good because of time, still pretty amazed at her abilities. “No need to be modest, I bet you're amazing.” He mewed, before feeling the need to add. “What's battle training like? I mean... does it hurt? Because I don't want to do it wrong and get hurt or hurt anyone else for that matter.” He pawed at the ground a little, hating the idea of accidentally hurting someone else because he messed up.

Hazepaw blinked in surprise. The young tom seemed to be really worried about his upcoming traning. Had he ever seen cats return from a battle training session wounded? As in, more than a little scratch that may occur once in a while, or a bruise from landing weirdly? She nudged him, smiling. "Hey, don't worry too much, alright? They won't make you hurt any cat. You fight with claws sheated, the worst thing that may happen is a bruise once in a few moons. After all it's adolescents allowed to fight one another, it always goes a little more roughly with the older toms." She gave a little laugh, remembering a past training session where she'd just been shoved out of the way so the older tom apprentices could mess their strength.
Suddenly, the she-cat's head jerked up when she heard her name sound from the other end of the cave. It was her mentor, Thistlefur's voice. "I've got to go", she murmured to him, stood up and laid her tail-tip onto his shoulder once more as she walked to meet the albino warrior in front of the warriors' den.
