It wasn't that Howlpaw misunderstood the dangers of climbing the mountainside on his own. He knew what could happen to a cat if they got too close to an edge, or lost their balance. It was more his need to better himself and to prove himself that had sent him on a quest to explore and hunt on the rocky mountain. Sure, there wasn't lots of prey to be found out here, but if he did manage to capture it, the clan would be most impressed with him. Purring at the thought, he carefully scrabbled over rocks, gripping with his claws and always checking his balance before leaping again. His mind, focused on the faintest smells of prey, and the dreams of the clan lauding his accomplishments, was far away enough to barely keep track of his surroundings and unaware of any other cats that may be in the area.

With the sun high in the sky, and reflecting its bright rays off of the snow that resided alongside the volcano's rocky mountain side, Quailstar had called the rest of the patrols to a halt for now. They would wait till a little later, to give the sun a chance to dip behind the volcano's side, protecting them from its bright light. But during the headcount, it had been discovered that a certian apprentice was not in the camp.
"I'm sorry Quailstar, I didn't notice he had slipped away! I'll go after him myself, he'll be back soon!"
The leader had shook his head, it was better for him to go, he knew the area better, and his skills in the rocky terrain would do him better. So he had headed out of camp, leaving the worried mentor behind.
The wind blew hard, and as Quailstar tracked the sent of the rogue apprentice, he heard a howl of a wolf. He shook his head, knowing that they wouldnt come up so high as the cats resided. He walked carefully, and finally caught a fresh scent, knowing Howlpaw was nearby.

It had taken him a very long time, but finally, Howlpaw had caught the scent of a mouse. He had followed it to a ledge on the mountain, and was now crouched down, watching the mouse scurry on the ledge. If his tail had been longer, it would have been twitching from excitement. He would catch this mouse, hide it, and then find the nest it must have come from and get even more mice for the Clan! They'd be so proud of him! Carefully, he began to creep towards the mouse, stopping with every step and freezing whenever the mouse looked around.
