The seemingly endless snow never forgot to remind him that the season cycle was drawing to a close and he was getting older with each passing moon. Even now as the black figure trekked through the elbow-high precipitation the snow continued at a lazy pace that equally matched the cat's progress.
Pirate-gold eyes flickered at the sight of any movement since the mostly white background annoyed the tom's routine thorough observation. With a sigh vapor seeped from the cat's jowls. It can't be long before this ends... His thoughts fed his hatred for the cold as the black tom cleared the jump over a fallen tree that had died long ago. The gold eyes narrowed suddenly and the warrior's body swiftly darted around. Out of paranoia or the realization of a genuine sound he did not know.
"W-who's there?" His words sliced through the frigid air to nobody or somebody.

Sucking in a deep breath of cold, crisp Leaf-bare air, Windchill couldn't help but smile lightly. The young cloud coloured she-cat was padding through the the forests south of Mount Talon, hunting as she had been doing all afternoon. Snow fell lightly from the overcast sky, but the little flakes didn't bother Windchill, nor did they dampen her spirits. In the branches above her, winter birds chirped to each other, fluttering through the bare treetops. Windchill sighed, her breath fogging out into the air. For her, the day couldn't be any brighter. And that was odd. For many seasons earlier, around this same time, Stonepaw had been snatched away by an eagle. But Windchill no longer mourned and grieved her brother's death; she just missed him, wishing that she could have spent more time with him... She was shaken from her thoughts when the wind suddenly changed directions, and a voice reached her ears.
"W-who's there?
Judging by the scent and sound, Windchill guessed that Batgaze was out on a solo patrol that day as well. He sounded paranoid, which was a little odd, but this provided an interesting opportunity for her. Windchill's face split into an evil grin, and she immediately dropped into a crouch, sneaking quietly through the snow until the dark warrior's pelt came into view. Windchill rocked on her haunches for a moment before bunching her muscles, and jumping. She exploded out of the bushes, shouting "BOO!" as she landed behind Batgaze, snow flying up around her.

The wind had changed direction on the unfortunate tom and his unsuccessful hunt, if that's what he was doing at all. Whatever remained of Batgaze's somewhat calm demeanor melted from his face with the need to change direction in order to not scare off what prey he did find.
"BOO!" A shout plummeted from behind the warrior and the snow fall doubled momentarily thanks to the entrails of the jumping feline.
The dark tom harrumphed and shook his fur free of the free-fall snow before he peered at his tormentor through golden eyes. He relaxed almost completely when he recognized his clanmate, Windchill, standing before him. With a flick of his tail and an ear he raised a brow. "Was I too easy?" He asked with a curious edge to his tone. Batgaze stepped back as if to size up competition before a smirk appeared on his mouth. "Well I can't be fooled twice, I hope you know."

Straightening up from her landing crouch and shaking some of the snow off her cloudy grey pelt, Windchill plopped down with a cheeky grin. "Hey Batgaze!" She watched as the tom-cat's bristled fur flattened, and he relaxed. Windchill was glad she hadn't startled him too badly; otherwise, he might've attacked her without realizing she was a friendly.
"Was I too easy?"

[/i] Windchill was still grinning, her bright yellow eyes shining with mischief. "Maybe just a little," she quipped, tail flicking back and forth. "You might wanna work on your tracking skills, Batpaw." She followed his subtle movements with her sharp eyes, gauging his reaction and trying to guess what his next move would be. He'd stepped back and was now looking her over, most likely trying to find the best place to attack first. Windchill got to her paws quickly, and crouched low, tail waving. "Well I can't be fooled twice, I hope you know."[/i] "I should hope not," she replied with a smirk, before lowering herself completely to the ground and then leaping at the dark tom with her powerful hind legs, aiming for his back. "Maybe a little,"
Batgaze's eyes narrowed as he watched the she-cat's eyes light up and her tail sway back and forth. He was going to agree with her accusation until Windchill smirked and said,
"You might wanna work on your tracking skills, Batpaw."
The tom's fur stood up in annoyance from his standpoint. Gold eyes watching his clanmate bounce up as if she was preparing for the first move.
"I should hope not."
Then everything happened in what seemed like a blur of grays and whites. Batgaze sat waiting and watching before his body contorted almost immediately when Windchill cleared the jump which obviously looked like it was meant for him. The dark tom condensed his body rather messily and darted forward to where Windchill had previously stood with that smirk planted on her face. "Gotta be quicker, dollface," he teased.

As soon as Windchill launched herself at the black tom, she knew her attack wouldn't hit. Batgaze had seen it coming, obviously, so it was clear she needed to be quicker. Speed was sadly not her strong-point, but Windchill didn't need that so much as tactics. So she prepared herself for the landing, ready to retaliate quickly.
When her forepaws hit the ground, the light grey she-cat sunk her claws into the snowy earth beneath her, using it as an anchor as she spun her body around to face Batgaze again. His quip didn't faze her, as she was already using her legs to propel herself forward at the tom again.
This time her aim was true. Windchill barreled into the tom's side with significant force, though not quite enough to tip him over. But she hoped at least that the hit would throw him off balance. She swiped a sheathed paw across his flank and then whirled away as quickly as she could, crouching low and lashing her tail, eyes bright and narrowed challengingly. "Was that quick enough for you?" She called across to him, smirking. Batgaze was a strong tom, and clever. He would make an excellent sparring partner.

The dark warrior gasped suddenly at the impact of Windchill's body ramming into Batgaze's. Out of panic due to loss of balance Batgaze scrambled to grip the frozen ground in any way that he could. A claw hooked a root that was uprooted and he fought his body's want to fall. His actions proved futile, though when Windchill swung a paw across the tom's flank.
Batgaze cursed under his breath when his body buckled just from the simplest touch. He forcibly sat in the snow with a scowl on his face.
"Was that quick enough for you?"
The dark tom was about to counter with something rather straightforward, but he held his tongue and feigned a frown. "Playing hard to get, hm?" He growled and met Windchill's eyes with equal challenge in his own. His nails unsheathed into the ground and Batgaze threw his body at his clanmate.

The smirk still hadn't let Windchill's face as she watched Batgaze plop into the snow. The pitch black tomcat frowned at her from across the clearing, and Windchill let out a satisfied chuckle, gaze never leaving Batgaze's form. She was prepared for anything he had to throw at her; well, at least she thought she was.
"Playing hard to get, hm?"
Windchill scoffed, scraping at the snow and dirt beneath with her claws. "Who said anything about playing?" She meowed, her retort accompanied by a friendly growl with Batgaze promptly returned. The cloudy grey she-cat leaned from side to side, trying to anticipate Batgaze's next mov, though it looked as though he'd lowered his guard,
Foolishly, Windchill did the same, realizing the dark tom's strategy too late. When he barreled into her, Windchill was thrown onto her side, rolling through the snow and landing hard on her stomach and paws, shaken (plus a bit dizzy) but unhurt. Windchill didn't have much time to react but she started to struggle to her paws, hoping to regain her defensive position before Batgze attacked again.
